CI-CD Centre for Inter-cultural Development
Intercultural recruiting, appraising, counselling, mentoring,
training, grievance handling, team building, disciplinaries, conducting
meetings. Many organisations claim to value
diversity. But the productive benefits of diversity don’t come from awareness
and good intentions alone: they emerge only if managers have due professional
skills of intercultural communication. These are crucial for fulfilling the
requirements of the Race Relations Act.

cross-cultural communication skills
CI-CD has been used to train the Employment Tribunals, and
Ombudsman Investigators, in how to check managers’ understanding and competence
in intercultural communication, as a key source of unlawful direct and indirect
discrimination, especially in the conduct of recruitment and appraisal
interviewing. Our BBC TV Training DVD Equal
before the Law?, made with and for the Tribunals themselves, features a hearing of the facts of a
real-life discrimination case against an NHS Trust.
In our specialist workshops on skills of cross-cultural communication
needed in conducting recruitment and appraisal interviews across cultures we
deploy our unique library of training DVD productions: for BBC TV, Crosstalk; Crosstalk at Work; Recruitment Interviewing across Cultures and Performance Appraisal across Cultures
(Prizewinners, Training Media Awards); Counselling
and Advice across Cultures; Successful at Selection (SaS): [(2007) 45 mins
DVD with manual, directed for Celia Roberts on skills of recruitment
interviewing across cultures (DWP/Job Centre Plus + King’s College)]; Fair Access: [(2007) on Wider Participation in
University and Medical School courses for health practitioners, including
interviewing candidates from overseas (Albanian + Indian), funded by DoH.
Clients include The Employment Tribunals; Employment Service; 20 NHS
Trusts; National Theatre; 30 local and County Councils; CIPD; NAPO; Cabinet
Office; DfES; Hawksmere Ltd; DoH; DWP; 15 universities.

Our intercultural skills workshops make a strong theme for team ’away-days’. All our
workshops have extremely powerful team-building side-effects. The
‘competencies’ approach serves as a useful way in to all aspects of
EO/Diversity policy implementation: managers and staff positively welcome
development of their professional communication skills: it helps resolve any
internal intercultural tensions, it dissolves any initial defensive feelings
and promotes ownership of EO/Diversity issues.
