Who we are

The Centre for Intercultural Development (CI-CD) is a research and training organisation specialising since 1978 in Cross-cultural Communication.

Working in partnership with Diversity Works Ltd., CI-CD is the hub of a network of the leading consultants in Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, USA and India. CVs, client lists and contact details are available on request.

CI-CD gives you direct access to consultancy with authoritative experts on the practical applications of cross-cultural communication. Its director is John Twitchin, BA Oxon, FCIPD, who created many training videos for BBC TV on this topic in conjunction with Professor John Gumperz, University of California, Berkeley, world-leading pioneer in the field of applied socio-linguistics. Many productions won Training Media Awards. The DVD ‘Crosstalk’ has been BBC TV’s most widely used and longest continuously selling training film.

CI-CD Director John Twitchin has conducted hundreds of customised training workshops on the awareness and skills of intercultural communication needed for executives and managers in international business negotiating or JV project/team leadership across cultures; for offshore customer relations training; for managers of a culturally diverse workforce in UK - in recruitment interviewing, performance appraising, and resolving tensions in diverse teams - and for front-line staff in public service delivery to culturally diverse communities.

For 25 years, John Twitchin was senior producer in charge of all BBC TV management training output, and also responsible for  BBC diversity, equality and multicultural programming. From among over 300 broadcast programmes, he created the training videos most widely used globally for anti-discrimination, equal opportunities, managing diversity and for developing awareness and skills of cross-cultural communication.

BBC productions include Crosstalk  (BBC’s longest selling training video); the prize-winning Recruitment Interviewing Across Cultures and Performance Appraisal Across Cultures; Counselling and Advice across Cultures; the MOSAIC project, comprising 60 programmes on anti-discrimination and managing diversity; Recognising Racial Discrimination at Work; Equal before the Law?; Attitudes to Islam; Evidence Unseen.

For SBS Channel in Australia John directed the 3-part documentary series What Makes You Say That? - Cultural Diversity at Work, illustrating and analysing case-studies of international negotiating and JV team leadership, and 3 training videos on gender and cultural diversity in Leadership; Teams and Meetings; Virtual Communication.
