1.     Training workshops for Managing Diversity in Public Services

Topics most commonly requested 2007 – 08 by Government Agencies, NHS Trusts, Borough/County/City Councils:

§         Anti-discrimination laws explained for busy managers: what the laws mean for everyday  mainstream practice, including Public Sector Duties and Risk/Impact assessing

§         Age discrimination – understanding the practical implications of the 2007 law

§         Flexible Working – the equality dimension

§         Sickness absence policies – keeping within equality law

§         Recruitment Interviewing and Selection – especially handling race/culture diversity

§         Performance Review/Appraisal – the equality dimension, especially race and gender

§         Front-line Service Delivery in culturally diverse communities – for equality of access

§         Intercultural Communication for successfully managing a diverse workforce – to resolve internal team tensions, and achieve better group motivation and problem-solving

§         Preventing/dealing with complaints of harassment - gender, age, sexual orientation, race - both within the workforce and from public towards staff

For 25 years we have run workshops to equip managers with the skills needed to turn anti-discrimination law and Diversity policies from words on paper into mainstream practice.

Our methods of training

§         establish full understanding of anti-discrimination laws, including risk/impact assessing and monitoring issues, plus attitudinal and behavioural dimensions of Diversity, eg, handling of sensitive attitudes, team tensions, harassment.

§         draw on small group exercises, questionnaires, handouts, documentary DVD evidence used interactively, simulations and role-plays, checklists for action planning – all customised to an organisation’s culture and current policies

§         produce powerful side effects as team-building exercises – engaging full ownership of the objectives. We handle constructively any defensive mixed feelings managers or staff bring to Diversity. We do not confront people: we help people confront the professional issues. We provide the practical skills for managing diversity.

§         act as stimulus to on-going informal learning both as individuals and as teams.

§         are designed consultatively and collaboratively with in-house Training Departments, HR managers, Departmental Heads, EO Committees, Advisory Groups, to customise content and method and to optimise long-term effectiveness.
